Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Among Music Fans

Marking 20 years after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the means to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who's mastered Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the display in time with a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, producing the feel of a genuine performance.

The studio had already tried its hand in the music genre prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was acquired by Activision in 2006. Together, they established the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable franchise that had a remarkable influence for many of the artists included, introducing classic bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the early financial challenges of licensing the recordings – even though the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song because the cost prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero took off, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many parents got in touch and thanked us for exposing their children to the music they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band the Answer included Never Too Late in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist recalls how the series brought classic rock back into vogue: “The game offered a bigger, new demographic. Typically this had been considered outdated material, however once it got included in the title and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised it, and got rid of the outdated label. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record was still unreleased stateside, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the band as they went on US tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late during travel, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and associated stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band greater revenue than any of their records. It moved more than 500,000 copies in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly at a time as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Recently, a streamer completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through the game – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay and extensive customisation options. The song is challenging even in the hardest setting, let alone performed at increased tempo while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. They stated it took nine months to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you should use actual weapons and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band previously completed a successful tour when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember our distributors informing us that we were records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Recently, the song featured in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “Should you just hear a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has a unique musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, be it for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

The majority installments were released in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs like DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene active, with set to be something from the original publisher on the way. A new studio has entered work on their first music game. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“Our team believed such titles could be similar to sports games where you can releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to continue with new generations.”
