Roughly fifty vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior political figure stated the attack rendered him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
